What happens when a bright future is interrupted?

As a young man coming of age in Kingston, Ontario, Rob absorbs knowledge with a passion. His love for learning takes him all over the world…

…from his school’s computer club…

…to a summer math camp in Chicago…

…to the CERN physics lab in Switzerland.

“Are you going to be a scientist too, like your father?” she asked.
I didn’t know how to answer. “I guess I could be.”
I could have been. I was a seed then and I could have grown into any tree.

It all changes one night during his undergrad years as he’s walking alongside the waterfront. There, he encounters a distraught woman…

…about to drown herself…

…in the waters of Lake Ontario.

The only difference between Jacob and me is that he is Jacob and I am me.
The difference between us causes our stories to branch away from each other at the moment that the woman utters those words.
“I’m going to kill myself.”

This meditative autobiographical novel explores the effects of trauma on a man’s mind, and the healing power of love and hope. Readers will follow Rob’s journey as he tries to find his way back from despair through writing, music, and hard work.

What does the future—once so clear—now hold?

A letter from a woman named Ann may hold the answer…

We spent hours talking.
When we spoke I could see a path in front of me, the same path that Jacob would follow.
I needed her.
